Curriculum Strength and Advanced Testing: Do They Matter?

we happened to be chatting with a mom of the prospective pupil recently. She raised concerns about our assessment of rigor and AP/IB/SAT topic tests. These questions have recently show up more often in a blog so I thought it would be fitting to address it. Possibly it’s because AP tests are coming quickly and pupils are beginning to question if it’s worthwhile to just take the tests.

First, let’s address rigor. The overall inquiry appears to basically boil down to the:

Are admission counselors in a position to objectively and fairly evaluate the curriculum power of every student?

In word, YES. At USC, we now have among the biggest, if perhaps not the largest admission staff of any private university in the country. Each user is assigned to a domestic or international area, or both. We take pride in looking after our territories. Relationships are forged and maintained with high school counselors, parents and prospective pupils. The aim is to have a comprehensive and understanding that is detailed of territory. We are particularly aware of what an application that is competitive like within its appropriate context. Finally, it is possible to start thinking about us as context specialists. Context is specially essential in our process. We recognize that rigor appears vastly unique and different for every school. Usage of scholastic and extracurricular tasks in each school that is high town, and region will vary.

It is got by me…rigor and context are essential. Is reasonable. Therefore now that I’ve taken all these advanced level courses, is it really beneficial to simply take the tests?

In another word, well the exact same word, YES. You’ve place in so much work learning the higher level product all 12 months. Then just take the test?! There are various other possible advantages besides the apparent financial cost savings you might have if you had been to pass these tests. In essence, you can end up freeing some devices to just take in another minor or even a dual major. Believe me, if you place in the ongoing work now, the benefits will outweigh the expenses so much more.

Generally speaking, then you will be able to transfer some credits into USC if you receive at least a 4 on any AP exam, or at least a 5 on any Higher Level IB Exam. To find out more, please go right to the USC Articulation web site.

Finally, SAT Subject Tests, what about those? Well, in short, they have been not required to submit an application for almost any program that is undergraduate USC. But, then go ahead and submit those scores to us if you happen to be taking them for another school and you receive a great score. We will absolutely give them a look.

Good luck on everybody else taking the AP and IB exams coming up. I wish this offers some of you a bit that is little motivation!

Mission Accomplished!

Moments ago, we bid adieu to a truck complete of admission choices. they truly are formally mailed today! Therefore exciting! To keep with our USC Admission Blog tradition, Dean of Admission Tim Brunold ended up being type sufficient to write a guest blog again in 2010. None of us takes joy or pride in this right section of our work. We have been, but, somewhat consoled by the known undeniable fact that our applicants have myriad options for degree. Past experience shows us that everybody else will find spot that’s right for them.
